I am trying to describe how we see ourselves and what we feel.

My subjects are people I know. When I meet with them, these relationships already have a past. Through the details, I want to describe who they are.

I look for depth and contradiction in the faces. It is a combination of strength and vulnerability that makes me respond. They are complex emotions that guide us. Sometimes our secrets are our most telling feature. As a child I learned not to believe what was in front of me. As an artist, I need to see what is there.

Like in Rembrandt’s portraits, it is our basic nature that will resonate long after this decade, to remind us of that tenuous place which is the human condition.
